"This week’s project is a sound journal, an audio history of the past year. You will select a different audio element to represent each of the past 12 months of 2013. You will then select one 5-second segment from each of these audio elements. Then you will stitch these dozen 5-second segments together in chronological order to form 1 single 1-minute track. There should be no overlap or gap between segments; they should simply proceed from one to the next."
I chose excerpts of 12 commercially unreleased tracks and recordings I made during 2013.
As I have said in the past - "I make way too much electronic music."
Recordings are:
0:00 to 0:05 - "Galloping A Little" - a variation on the crazy 18 minute track "Galloping Again" from my album Crackle And Drift - I owe a significant debt to Fenn O'Berg on that one.
0:05 to 0:10 - "Ghosts of the Woods" - it goes on like that for 13 minutes.
0:10 to 0:15 - "Losting (version 5)" - poor recording but an interesting effect. A couple variations of Losting will be released on an EP in very early 2014. They're different than this, and very beautiful.
0:15 to 0:20 - "Snowflakes (version 3)" - If I find something I like, I keep working and reworking it. The original version of Snowflakes will be released on an EP in early 2014.
0:20 to 0:25 - "EBG" - stands for electronic bluegrass. I was messing with some blues loops in Samplr and it ended up kind-of bluegrass-like. Interesting, but I won't be releasing that.
0:25 to 0:30 - me testing sound levels when Jon Harnish and I recorded in June at EEC in Iowa City.
0:30 to 0:35 - "Hollows" - an edited track from the same session with Jon.
0:35 to 0:40 - "Seven Sea" - Jon and I making magic happen live at EEC.
0:40 to 0:45 - Jon talking to Stephanie while I do a little demo of my iPad controlling Ableton Live.
0:45 to 0:50 - an untitled sketch from August 25th. My archives are filled with this sort of stuff.
0:50 to 0:55 - "Laundromat" - a finished track that is waiting around and I'm unsure about releasing.
0:55 to 1:00 - "Assistance" - a Samplr-based remix of loops I used in my 2004 track "Adventitious", which is very heavily blues-based. This will eventually be released, unless I can make something even better based on the same recordings.
Picture of the Soundcloud merch was taken by me and is via Instagram. Soundcloud sent a nice care package this summer. The t-shirt was excellent, a fine quality fabric from American Apparel.
